Fall protection in the construction industries
In the construction industries over 400 workers die each year from falls in the United States alone. The US Department of Labor (DOL) lists falls as one of the leading causes of traumatic occupational death, accounting for 28% of all occupational fatalities from trauma.
Workers who habitually work at heights forget the danger they are in and how one small slip can lead to disaster. Those particularly at risk work on roofing, scaffolding or on suspended platforms.
To reduce the risks, workers need to be trained appropriately and adhere to workplace safety guidelines, including OSHA/CSA and using equipment that adheres to the latest ANSI standards.
An OSHA study estimated that for every $1 invested in good safety and health programs, $4 to $6 are saved in other costs.
In construction fall protection anchorages are often temporary and in some cases, such as with rosettes on scaffolding, the possibility exists that in certain incompatible situations the gate of the hook can become loaded in the event of a fall. In these situations the gate specifications for older hooks may be insufficient to ensure their integrity. PenSafe strongly recommends that all components used in the field comply with the proposed new ANSI Z 359.1-07ED standard that mandates hooks have a gate side load and gate face load strength of 3,600lbs.
